Virgin Media O2’s network is now over 90 percent gigabit-ready, putting the ISP on track to upgrade its entire footprint by year-end.

The provider’s latest switch-on connected a further 1.6 million homes in towns and cities including Lincoln, Bath, Lancaster, Fife, Huddersfield, Ipswich, Slough, and Salisbury.

14.3 million premises are now able to access the gigabit network’s average download speeds of 1,130Mbps.

Lutz Schüler, Chief Executive Officer at Virgin Media O2, said:

“We’re making great strides ahead in upgrading the UK and are within touching distance of bringing the benefits of future-proof gigabit broadband to everyone on our network.

With our gigabit rollout progressing at an unmatched pace, we’re building the next-generation broadband network that’s ready for the technology of tomorrow.”

With its latest switch-on, Virgin Media O2 has further secured its place as the UK’s largest gigabit provider.

Virgin Media O2 has committed to invest at least £10bn over the next five years in the UK.

While the provider has the largest gigabit network in the UK, its overall fibre availability lags behind Openreach-based rivals by some margin. Part of its investment commitment will focus on deploying fibre “to millions of additional homes” across the country.

Back in July, Virgin Media O2 also announced plans to upgrade its entire UK network to full-fibre by 2028. The technology is able to deliver symmetrical 10Gbps download and upload speeds.
