UK-based MVNO Truphone will use EE’s network after signing a five-year deal with BT Wholesale.
Truphone’s customers will benefit from EE’s network which, according to independent tests, is the best overall in the UK for coverage and speeds. At present, Truphone is operating on O2’s network.
Ralph Steffens, CEO of Truphone, said:
“We’re incredibly excited to partner with BT Wholesale, the clear market leader in the UK, on this important relationship in one of our core mobile markets.
It’s fantastic to be able to offer our customers the scale and reliability of BT’s network and we are really looking forward to all the opportunities this partnership will afford us.”
Ofcom’s most recent Connected Nations report found that EE’s 4G network covers more than 86 percent of the UK landmass—around 2,500 square miles more than its nearest competitor.
Alex Tempest, Managing Director of BT Wholesale, commented:
“This new agreement is great news for Truphone customers, who will soon be able to benefit from data speeds more than twice as fast as any other network.
Alongside Truphone’s success in Enterprise mobile, we have been particularly impressed with Truphone’s capability and ambitions in IoT.”
In September 2021, Truphone announced a collaboration with cellular IoT chipset provider Sony Semiconductor Israel and security leader Kigen. The collaboration saw Truphone deploying its IoT platform and global connectivity to run on the integrated SIM of Sony’s Altair cellular IoT chipsets, powered by Kigen iSIM OS.
“This collaboration demonstrates Truphone’s strength and leadership in enabling connectivity for IoT,” said Steffens at the time.
“This merging of technologies will create powerful, scalable IoT deployments. We’re thrilled to be joining Sony and Kigen in bringing seamless connectivity to a breadth of industries—from vehicles to wearables, and everything in-between.”
Today’s announcement with BT doesn’t say whether Truphone will have access to EE’s 5G network as part of the agreement. We’ve reached out to clarify and will update this article with the response in due course.
