EE launches 5G in three Tube stations

EE customers are now able to access 5G connectivity in three London Underground stations.

Customers travelling through Archway, Tufnell Park, and Notting Hill Gate will now benefit from high-speed connectivity.

EE says 5G connectivity will be available “from ticket hall to platform” at all three stations. The only station with 5G within the tunnel segment is Notting Hill Gate, EE says the other two stations will join “shortly”.

BT and Stratospheric Platforms will test beaming 5G from aircraft

BT is partnering with Stratospheric Platforms (SPL) to test beaming 5G from a High-Altitude Platform Station (HAPS) aircraft.

The duo hopes the project will provide a solution to a key challenge of mobile connectivity: providing coverage to the most rural and difficult-to-reach areas.

“We’re delighted to be partnering with SPL to start realising the huge potential of HAPS aircraft to further strengthen our UK 4G and 5G network technology leadership,” said Tim...

Nokia and Safaricom trial Africa’s first 5G FWA network slicing

Nokia and Safaricom have trialled Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) network slicing on a live 4G and 5G network in Africa.

Network slicing enables operators to divide their networks into multiple virtual slices that can be optimised for a specific application or service. Each slice can be given its own priority in addition to different levels of security.

The pioneering trial utilised a multi-vendor network environment and included RAN, transport, and core as well as software...

Opensignal: Three UK dominates in 5G download speed, leads in availability

Three UK has achieved some impressive 5G results in OpenSignal’s latest Mobile Network Experience Report.

The UK’s smallest mobile operator by subscribers got its name from being the first to launch a 3G network in the country. When it came to 4G, many reports found that Three often fell behind rivals in speed and availability.

With the rollout of 5G now fully underway, Three is making a serious effort to secure its leadership.

Vodafone will begin shuttering 3G in 2023 to improve 4G/5G services

Vodafone has announced plans to begin shuttering its 3G network in 2023 to focus on improving 4G/5G services.

The operator says that less than 4 percent of data traffic across its network is now delivered via 3G—compared to over 30 percent in 2016. By the end of this year, the amount of 3G traffic is likely to have dwindled even further.

With the vast amount of traffic carried over 4G – and increasingly 5G – it makes sense for Vodafone to improve those...
